Shared Appreciation for Cambodia as Mine-Free World Summit Host

As Cambodia prepares to host the Siem Reap-Angkor Summit on a Mine-Free World on Nov. 25-29, government officials, citizens, and students share appreciation for the role.

As a Cambodian who has suffered for years from the flames of war and has a constant fear of the dangers of landmines and unexploded ordnance left over from the war, Mr. Hong Horn, Principal of Samdech Heng Samrin Anlong Chrey High School in Thbong Khmum province, sees the meaning of the summit for Cambodia.

The landmine, which is the legacy of wars, had claimed lives and caused injuries and disabilities for Cambodians almost every day, he recalled.

The Royal Government has been working hard to address the issues, transforming mine fields into household and farm land, schools, and other infrastructures, so the experience will be heard by the 164 countries that will participate in the summit, contributing to promoting a world free of landmines, he underlined.

Mr. Ang Santivan, a resident of Banteay Meanchey province, expressed his pride f
or Cambodia as the host of the summit, viewing it as an opportunity for Cambodia to show the world more about its capabilities.

He echoed Mr. Hong Horn that by attending this meeting, all participants will learn about the transformation of minefields into agricultural land and peaceful communities.

Meanwhile, a resident of Siem Reap province Mr. San Sophan has witnessed the demining activities of the government and partners, getting rid of landmines completely from his community.

Cambodia has not only been able to clear mines across almost the entire country but will also host the Siem Reap-Angkor Summit and other world meetings, he said.

Mr. Hul Rom, a student at the Royal University of Law and Economics in Phnom Penh, sees the role of Cambodia as an honour for every Cambodian.

Senior Minister H.E. Dr. Ly Thuch, who is the First Vice President of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) and Chairman of the 2024 Ottawa Convention, is committed to coordinating the summit to address
shortcomings in demining activities, identify solutions, and promote continued political commitment and humanitarian support to achieve the global goal of a mine-free world.
