Cambodia Attends 3rd ASEAN SOMTC on Illegal Wildlife and Timber Trade

Cambodia has attended the 3rd ASEAN Senior Officials’ Meeting on Transnational Crimes (SOMTC) on Illegal Wildlife and Timber Trade.
The meeting took place recently via a video conference through the coordination of Thailand’s SOMTC.
Participating Cambodian delegation was led by Brigadier General Mr. Heng Panhavath, Head of Foreign Affairs of the General Commissariat of National Police, and other Senior Officials from ASEAN member countries joined the virtual meeting.
The meeting aimed to strengthen the collaboration between ASEAN member countries on the field.
It is a good opportunity for participating countries to discuss the current situation of wildlife and timber trade as we as to exchange experience in crackdown of the crimes.

NOCC to Mark Olympic Day Next Week

The National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC) will virtually organise the Olympic Day on June 23.
The update was shared on Tuesday by H.E. Vath Chamroeun, Secretary General of NOCC, adding that it was an annually event observed in June by the International Olympic Committee.
The event aims to promote the Olympic movement and reminds the world about the value of Olympic, sports and life.
A physical celebration of the event cannot be done due to the current situation of COVID-19, so an online platform will be used to mark it.
During the celebration, NOCC will engage Cambodian Olympic athletes who had participated in Olympic Games to share message with the public especially the youth to encourage them to play sport for health.
According to H.E. Vath Chamroeun, some 100 athletes for the international boxing, triathlon, cycling, hockey, gymnastics, swimming and athletics will join the event.

Some 2,500 Eggs of Cantor’s Giant Softshell Turtles Recorded in First Five Months

During the first five months of this year, 2,498 eggs of Cantor’s giant softshell turtles in 66 protected nests have been found by community fisheries (CFIs) along the Mekong River, in Stung Treng and Kratie provinces, according to USAID Greening Prey Lang.
In 2020, it continued, there were only 49 protected nests of 1,756 eggs.
USAID Greening Prey Lang provides support for CFis to conduct patrols to protect Cantor’s giant softshell turtles, pointed out the same source, underlining that the objective of the patrols is to stop illegal fishing activities within the CFis and remove illegal fishing gear from the river.
Patrol teams also monitor to ensure there is no illegal collection of turtles or their eggs and that no illegal fishing activities occur in areas where the turtles breed during the annual nesting season, it added.
Cantor’s Giant Softshell Turtle (Pelochelys cantorii) is listed on the IUCN Red List as globally Endangered. It was thought extinct in the Cambodian portion of the Mekong River until its re-discovery in 2007 in a 48-kilometre stretch of the river in Kratie and Stung Treng provinces.

Senior Minister Sun Chanthol Receives AmCham Delegation

A delegation of the American Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia (AmCham) led by its Chairman Mr. Anthony Galliano, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister and Minister of Public Works and Transport, at the ministry office recently.
On the occasion, H.E. Sun Chanthol briefed the delegation on road network connection across the country and road improvement from DBST to AC to expand national economic scope.
The delegation was updated on completed, ongoing and under study infrastructure construction projects, which continue despite the COVID-19 threat in Cambodia as well as in the world.
H.E. Senior Minister also informed his guests about the use of new technologies to support effective public service provision and the development of new project of driving score deduction, which allows traffic police officers to automatically deduct driving score, send information to licence issuing centre and licence owners who committed traffic violation.
According to H.E. Sun Chanthol, Cambodia is thinking about green transport policy and strategy to adapt to the progress of globalisation, mainly the use of electric vehicles to reduce operating costs and greenhouse gas emissions.
Regarding human resource development, the minister mentioned about Techo Sen Institute of Public Works and Transport to develop the new generations of Cambodian engineers.
The AmCham delegation lauded the efforts of the ministry and the Royal Government of Cambodia with high responsibility to boost rapid infrastructure development.

COVID-19: 625 New Cases, 705 New Recoveries, 12 New Deaths

The Ministry of Health this morning announced the detection of 625 new cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19); the tally rose to 40,782.
According to its press release, of the new infections, 34 are imported and the rest are community cases linked to the Feb. 20 incident.
The ministry also recorded 705 newly recovered patients; bringing the total number of cured cases in Cambodia to 35,030.
Besides, 12 more people have lost their lives due to COVID-19; the total fatal cases thus stood at 380.
The first COVID-19 case was reported in Cambodia in late January 2020 in Preah Sihanouk province. The confirmed cases have surged quickly this year due to the Feb. 20 community outbreak.
