COVID-19: 896 New Cases; Tally 55,187

Cambodia’s daily cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) dropped a little bit to 896 this morning; the tally stood at 55,187.
According to a press release of the Ministry of Health, 210 of the new infections are imported, and the rest are locally transmitted cases connected to the Feb. 20 Community Event.
At the same time, 646 more patients have successfully recovered; the total cured patients in the Kingdom rose to 47,386.
Besides, 28 more deaths were registered; bringing the death toll to 748.
The first COVID-19 case was detected in Cambodia in late January 2020 in Preah Sihanouk province. The confirmed cases have surged quickly this year due to the Feb. 20 community outbreak.

Cambodia to Have Heavy Rain This Week

The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology (MOWRAM) has forecast heavy rain along with gusts this week.
In the ministry’s new weather update released this morning, the affected areas are the provinces in the low land areas around the Tonle Sap, and those along the Dangrek mountain range and the Mekong as well as the coastal areas.
At the same time, MOWRAM underlined, the Mekong water will begin to rise.
The ministry also appealed to the public and fishermen as well as seafarers to increase their vigilance to avoid any possible accidents.

Battambang-Banteay Meanchey Road Construction Project Almost Completed

The construction of an 87-kilometre-long road section from Battambang province to Banteay Meanchey province, part of the National Road No. 5 Improvement Project, has been almost completed.
The updated was shared recently by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Cambodia Office, after the inspection visit to the construction site by H.E. Tauch Chankosal, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, H.E. Mikami Masahiro, Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia, and Ms. Kamei Haruko, Chief Representative of JICA Cambodia Office.
Besides the Battambang-Banteay Meanchey section, the road construction from Prek Kdam, north of Phnom Penh capital, to Battambang province, has been achieved at approximately 50 percent, the source added.
“We would like to express our gratitude for the understanding of Cambodian people during the construction and request the public to respect the traffic laws for safety for everyone,” said JICA.
The National Road No. 5 Improvement project has a total length of 366 kilometres connecting the capital to the northwestern part of the country passing through Kampong Chhnang, Pursat, Battambang, and Banteay Meanchey provinces.
The road is being built with four lanes with a width of 23 metres.
Built with Japanese grant of US$500 million, the National Road No. 5 is part of the ASEAN highway connecting Cambodia to Thailand and Vietnam.

Koh Tonsay Tourism Seaport Construction Project 75% Complete

The construction project of a tourism seaport at Koh Tonsay in Kep province is now 75 percent complete, said an official of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT).
It took already over a year since the groundbreaking ceremony and the construction continues despite the COVID-19 pandemic, underlined Mr. Ros Sophorn, Director of MPWT’s Waterway Infrastructure and Port Construction Department.
The seaport project is part of Kep Tourism Master Plan and the maritime transportation connectivity project between seaport in Koh Tonsay and a tourism seaport in Kampot province which is under construction.
Once built, the port will not only serve tourists, but also become a pier for light cargo ships.

His Majesty the King Extends Congratulations to U.S. President on Independence Day

His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia, has recently sent a congratulatory message to H.E. Joe Biden, President of the United States of America on the U.S. Independence Day.
The full royal message reads as follows:
“It is with great pleasure that I convey sincere congratulations to Your Excellency on the occasion of the 245th anniversary of Independence of the United States of America.
