Cambodian PM Says No Talks on Internal Affairs with UN Secretary-General

AKP Phnom Penh, Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen has totally rejected any information saying that he and UN Secretary-General H.E. António Guterres had discussed internal affairs of Cambodia during their meeting in Phnom Penh recently.

“I don’t know where the information has leaked saying that H.E. António Guterres asked me to do this and that, actually there was no talk on that,” he underlined here this morning while presiding over the closing ceremony of the Conference Commemorating 30 Years of Mine Action in Cambodia.

Samdech Techo Prime Minister said the main topic during his meeting with H.E. António Guterres was only about mine clearance, peacekeeping cooperation, and Khmer Rouge Tribunal.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen reaffirmed that he and H.E. António Guterres had never talked about the Cambodian internal affairs. H.E. António Guterres is a good friend of him, he was the Prime Minister of Portugal while he himself is the Prime Minister of Cambodia.

Cambodia Committed to Achieve Mine-free Status by 2025

AKP Phnom Penh, Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen this morning reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment for its mine-free goal by 2025.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Conference Commemorating 30 Years of Mine Action in Cambodia held at Koh Pich Convention and Exhibition Centre, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said Cambodia has spent millions of U.S. dollars on energy, then on physical infrastructure construction in Preah Sihanouk and Siem Reap provinces, therefore Cambodia can also invest in mine-free initiative by 2025.

“Without commitment and determination, we cannot achieve our mine-free goal by 2025,” he stressed. “Demining is a good merit act for humanity”.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen said he will discuss this issue with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance H.E. Aun Pornmoniroth.

H.E. Ly Thuch, Senior Minister and First Vice President of Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) said the celebration of 30th anniversary of mine action in Cambodia is to highlight the historical achievement in mine action in Cambodia and commemorate the expertise and sacrifice, both physical and mental, of the mine action operators, as well as to thank all donors and development partners for their support for mine clearance activities in Cambodia.

The Kingdom’s mine clearance operations started in 1992 with the support from the United States, Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom, the People’s Republic of China, Germany, Switzerland, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Canada, Norway, Hungary, France, India, Ireland, Spain, Sweden, Belgium, Austria, UNDP and UNICEF.

According to CMAA’s report, in the past 30 years, Cambodia released some 2,531 square kilometres of contaminated land, found and destroyed 1,151,232 anti-personnel mines, 26,112 anti-tank mines, and 3,028,659 items of unexploded ordnance, benefiting about 9 million people.

Australian Defence Minister Visits Cambodia This Week

AKP Phnom Penh, Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, H.E. the Hon Richard Marles MP, is travelling to Cambodia to attend the 9th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus).

According to a media release of the Australian Department of Defence issued this morning, on the back of successful Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summits attended by Australian Prime Minister H.E. Albanese two weeks ago, H.E. the Hon Richard Marles MP will participate in the 9th ADMM-Plus on Nov. 23.

The ADMM-Plus is the region’s premier defence dialogue, providing a forum to discuss the key challenges facing the Indo-Pacific, the source added.

While in Cambodia, it pointed out, the Deputy Prime Minister will meet a number of his counterparts, including Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence, Samdech Pichey Sena Tea Banh.

Cambodian Ministry of National Defence is hosting the 9th ADMM Retreat, 9th ADMM-Plus, and Related Meetings in Siem Reap province from Nov. 21 to 23 to discuss the enhancement of regional cooperation towards peace, security and sustainable prosperity.

National High School Exam to Take Place on Dec. 5-6

AKP Phnom Penh, Ministry of Education Youth and Sports has announced Dec. 5-6 as the date for the national high school examination in Cambodia.

The ministry released the notification on Nov. 21 stressing that the exam will strictly comply with the principles of law, fairness, transparency, and acceptable result.

A total of 128,134 students, 68,771 of them are female, have registered for the exam to take place in 5,174 classrooms at 221 exam centres across the country.

The ministry has listed 27,753 regulators to monitor the process of the examination.

It will notify the name list of participating students twice before the exam – first on Nov. 28 for them to see their exam centres and second on Dec. 4 for them to double-check the information.

The ministry welcomes exam-related questions from parents and students at its official Facebook page www.facebook.com/moeys.gov.kh.

As planned, the announcement of the examination results will take place on Dec. 27 for students in Phnom Penh capital and Kandal province, while those of the rest of the students will be released on Dec. 28.

The ministry also encouraged participating students to carry out necessary health safety measures.

Kun Bokator Grabs a Gold Medal at IMAC in South Korea

AKP Phnom Penh, Cambodia has won 5 medals – 1 gold and 4 silver, for Kun Bokator at the International Martial Arts Contest (IMAC) in South Korea.

The good news was shared by Mr. Ou Dara, Deputy Secretary General of Bokator Federation of Cambodia (BFC), adding that the gold medalist is Ms. Phithy Chanchhorvy competing in Weapons Single Female.

Taking place from Nov. 18 to 20, the competition attracted athletes from 10 countries.

The Cambodian SEA Games Organising Committee (CAMSOC) sent 10 Cambodian Bokator athletes and coaches to the competition, according to Mr. Ou Dara.

The achievement implies improved capacity of Cambodian athletes, reassuring their readiness for the 32nd SEA Games 2023 to be hosted by Cambodia, he added.
