Nominations Open for the Merkin Prize in Biomedical Technology

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Nov. 29, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Nominations are now open for the first award of the Richard N. Merkin Prize in Biomedical Technology, which recognizes novel technologies that have improved human health.

Each year, the prize will celebrate a novel technology and recognize up to four key individuals and/or teams who contributed to the development of the technology, with a cash award of $400,000 to be shared among each year’s recipients. The winning technology must have made a demonstrable real-world impact on human health by improving the treatment, diagnosis, or prevention of disease.

The Merkin Prize is administered by the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, one of the world’s leading biomedical research institutes.

“The Merkin Prize will highlight the inventors of an important medical technology and will demonstrate how their work is transforming healthcare,” said Harold Varmus, chair of the selection committee. Varmus is the Lewis Thomas University Professor at Weill Cornell Medicine, a senior associate at the New York Genome Center, and a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on the origins of cancer.

“Incentivizing outstanding researchers with prizes that recognize the importance of science and technology that continue to impact human health is a goal of mine and I’m honored to acknowledge such critically important work,” said Dr. Merkin. “Additionally, I hope it will inspire younger researchers as they move forward with exciting opportunities to transform and improve our health and the quality of our lives.”

Eligibility for receipt of the Merkin Prize extends to all living investigators from anywhere in the world, from any discipline in academia, the commercial sector, or the government. Anyone may submit a nomination, but self-nominations are not permitted. Nominations must be submitted by Jan. 30, 2023.

Angkor Thanksgiving to be Organised in Mid-December

Royal Government of Cambodia has decided in principle to allow APSARA National Authority to organise an event of “Angkor Thanksgiving” in mid-December.
The decision was announced in a press release from the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts issued recently.
To take place in Siem Reap province from Dec. 14 to 16, the event aims at commemorating Cambodia’s ancestors, previous kings and queens who had built many temples, as well as all generations of the conservation teams of those temples.
It will feature range of achievements resulted by the collaboration between national and international stakeholders in conservation work.
The event is also expected to give an opportunity for the public to visit and learn about the restoration work at the sites where the APSARA National Authority is operating.

Cambodia Kantha Bopha Foundation Contributes to Sustainable Health Care Service for Cambodian Children

The Cambodia Kantha Bopha Foundation has contributed to ensuring the sustainability of free of charge health care service for the Cambodian children along with the funds from foundation in Switzerland, said Dr. Denis Laurent, Director General of Kantha Bopha Children’s Hospital.
The Cambodia Kantha Bopha Foundation was officially established in 2018 by the Royal Government of Cambodia under the leadership of Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen to provide medical care and treatment to more Cambodian children.
“This new foundation is to find more and more funds for Kantha Bopha, so now I can tell you honesty that we are sure to go on for next five or ten years with the same policy – free of charge for everybody with high level of treatment,” he said after a meeting with H.E. Khieu Kanharith, Minister of Information this morning.
Dr. Beat Richner, who passed away four years ago, founded the first Kantha Bopha Children’s Hospital in 1992. In the following 30 years, four more hospitals have been established in Cambodia with more than 2,000 beds in Phnom Penh capital and Siem Reap province.

National Authority for Preah Vihear to Organise “Temple Walk” to Attract More Tourists

National Authority for Preah Vihear in collaboration with Asia-Pacific Tourism Association of Cambodia (PATACC) will organise a sports tourism event dubbed “Temple Walk” on Dec. 3-4, 2022.
The event, to be held at Preah Vihear Resort in Preah Vihear province, intends to enhance Cambodia’s tourism and environment sectors through the sports tourism activity.
The registration for “Temple Walk” is open from now on until Nov. 30.
The forthcoming event is expected to attract the participation of about 250 national and international tourists.

Ministry of Transport Launches New EV Charging Station, Urging EV Uses

Ministry of Public Works and Transport on Tuesday put into use a new electric vehicle charging station, urging the public to use EVs in a bid to contribute to reducing CO2 emissions and save economically compared to the fossil fuel vehicles.
The presence of new EV charging stations contributes to encouraging the use of EVs in Cambodia, said H.E. Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister, Minister of Public Works and Transports at the inauguration ceremony of the new EV charging station at the ministry.
H.E. Senior Minister reaffirmed the Royal Government of Cambodia’s commitment to combating environmental pollution and to protecting the environment that makes our lives healthier.
“One of the few things we need to do to reduce pollution is by switching to electric vehicles,” H.E. Sun Chanthol underlined.
The ministry registered 556 EVs in January-October 2022, an 11-time increase over the same period last year.
