Cambodia Voices Support for Australia’s Proposal to Elevate its Relations with ASEAN

Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Prak Sokhonn, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia has welcomed Australia’s proposal to elevate its relations with ASEAN to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The Cambodian top diplomat voiced the support at the ASEAN Post Ministerial Conference (PMC) with Australia held yesterday via Videoconference.
H.E. Prak Sokhonn took the opportunity to thank Australia for actively contributing to regional integration and narrowing the development gaps in the region.
He also highlighted the significant support that Australia has provided in terms of human resource development.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the PMC with Australia welcomed the progress of ASEAN-Australia Dialogue Relations which marked an important milestone last year with the agreement by both sides to annualise the ASEAN-Australia Summit.
In implementing the Plan of Action 2020-2024, both sides emphasised the importance of advancing cooperation on connectivity, particularly through the implementation of the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity (MPAC) 2025, the Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI) Workplan IV and the extended ASEAN-Australia Digital Standards Initiative.
ASEAN thanked Australia for its support towards enhancing region-wide access to vaccines and health security, including its financial pledge for the establishment of the ASEAN Centre for Public Health Emergencies and Emerging Diseases (ACPHEED) and the establishment of the ASEAN-Australia Health Security Initiative.

Cambodia Emphasises Opportunity for ASEAN-India Cooperation on COVID-19 Vaccine Development

H.E. Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia, has laid stress on the opportunity for ASEAN-India cooperation on vaccine development against the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the ASEAN Post Ministerial Conference (PMC) with India held on Wednesday via Videoconference, the Cambodian top diplomat highlighted that India’s leading edge in the field of pharmaceuticals presents a great opportunity for cooperation on COVID-19 vaccine development between ASEAN Member States and India.
H.E. Deputy Prime Minister also encouraged further cooperation on trade promotion and emphasised the importance of ASEAN-India Business Council (AIBC) in promoting linkages between prominent business leaders. He also encouraged India to support ASEAN regional integration efforts through the IAI Work Plan IV, especially in areas related to digitalisation and technological advancement.
During the meeting, ASEAN welcomed the designation of the year 2022 as the “ASEAN-India Friendship Year”, and India’s proposal for an ASEAN-India Joint Statement on Cooperation on the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) and Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI).
To enhance regional connectivity, ASEAN encouraged the expansion of physical and digital connectivity projects between ASEAN and India and looked forward to the timely completion of the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway and its possible extension to Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Viet Nam.

Cambodian Foreign Minister Underlines Importance of Strengthening EAS Process

Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Prak Sokhonn, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation highlighted the importance of strengthening the EAS process to better serve common causes and stressed on the need to remain focused on delivering concrete outcomes on the nine priority areas under the Manila Plan of Action.
At the 11th East Asia Summit (EAS) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (FMM) held yesterday via Videoconference, H.E. Prak Sokhonn also pointed out the merit of adjusting the new Plan of Action to place a greater emphasis on the priorities of post-COVID recovery such as strengthening public health security, enhancing logistics and supply chain connectivity, digitalisation, and women and youth entrepreneurship.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, during the Meeting, all Ministers acknowledged the significant progress made on the implementation of the Manila Plan of Action to Advance the Phnom Penh Declaration on the EAS Development Initiative (2018-2022) and committed to accelerate efforts to ensure its effective and timely implementation.
The Meeting emphasised the importance of vaccine multilateralism and called for equitable, affordable and timely access to vaccine and adequate flows of medical supplies to support public health security in the face of the resurgence of COVID-19 pandemic.

UNICEF Praises Cambodia’s Vaccination Programme

The United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) said Cambodia is one of the nations have been well conducting the vaccination programme against the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Cambodia has one of the highest percentages of COVID-19 vaccination among its adult population in the WHO Western Pacific Region and is among the top 17 countries in the world to first vaccinate teachers,” it stated on its social media network.
As of Aug. 3, there are some 7.60 million people have got the first doses and 5.03 million the second doses.
For the target of 10 million adults, the vaccination has achieved at 74.84 percent, while for the children aged from 12 to under 18, the vaccination coverage has reached 6.31 percent.

Cambodian Foreign Minister to Attend 14th Mekong-Japan Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Prak Sokhonn, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation will participate in the 14th Mekong-Japan Foreign Ministers’ Meeting which will be held on Aug. 6, 2021 via videoconference.
This meeting will be chaired by H.E. Motegi Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan and will also be attended by Foreign Ministers from other Mekong countries namely Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam.
The Mekong-Japan Foreign Ministers will review the progress of the Mekong-Japan cooperation in various areas, set out future direction of this cooperation for promoting sustainable development, enhancing social, economic and cultural interconnections among Mekong countries and Japan, and realising a more vibrant Mekong sub-region, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and emerging challenges. They will also exchange views on regional and international issues of common interests and concerns.
