Cambodia, USAID to Continue Cooperation in Fighting Infectious Diseases

Cambodia and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) have expressed their commitment especially on fighting infectious diseases including HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis.
The commitment was stressed during a recent meeting here at the Ministry of Health’s office between Dr. Or Vandine, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Health and Ms. Nancy Eslick, the Mission Director for USAID in Cambodia.
Ms. Nancy Eslick spoke highly of the Ministry of Health in improving health quality, especially the control of the COVID-19 pandemic, and she looked forward to contributing to it through promoting digital health, transmission system, and prevention against non-communicable diseases.
H.E. Dr. Or Vandine thanked USAID for the cooperation and encouraged more technical meetings between both sides for information exchange health sector development.

Asian Elephant Found in Cambodia

Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus) listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list of threatened species have been spotted in Cambodian forests.
The good news was shared on Jan. 27 by the Ministry of Environment, adding that Asian Elephant were founded in protected areas of the country.
The researchers from the Ministry of Environment have discovered them in Cambodian wildlife sanctuaries through camera traps.
Reportedly, the extinction of the Asian elephants was threatened by habitat loss and poaching for illegal trade of their skin, toenails, gallstones, ivory and captivity.
The Asian elephant, also known as the Asiatic elephant, is the only living species of the genus Elephas, and is living in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia.

Cambodia’s Economic Growth Revised to 3 Percent in 2021

Cambodia’s economic growth in 2021 has been revised to 3 percent, thanks to the strength of external demand reflected by the growth of industrial sector, especially the sub-sector of garment and non-garment manufacturing, as well as the agricultural sector.
The Ministry of Economy and Finance updated the revised growth rate in a meeting on macroeconomic update of global and Cambodia held on Jan. 26.
The meeting was chaired by H.E. Vongsey Vissoth, Permanent Secretary of State at the Ministry of Economy and Finance and attended by representatives from the IMF, ADB, World Bank, and UNDP.
“Based on the ministry’s assessment, Cambodia’s economy is expected to recover at a low growth rate of 3.0 percent in 2021 from a negative growth of -3.1 percent in 2020,” read a statement, stressing that the growth of industry, the garment and non-garment sub-sectors, and agriculture are the factors pushing the recovery growth.
For 2022, the GDP growth rate is projected to reach around 5.6 percent and gradually move towards potential growth in the medium term, the ministry said in the statement.
The growth is supported by the global demand and a gradual recovery in investment confidence and anticipation of the effective implementation of the Strategic Framework and Programmes to restore and stimulate Cambodia’s economic growth in the context of COVID-19 in the new normal 2021-2023, which will restore Cambodia’s economic growth to return to potential growth and strengthen socio-economic resilience to achieve sustainable development and environment, underlined the statement.

COVID-19: 38 New Cases Reported; Tally 121,188

Cambodia’s tally of COVID-19 rose to 121,188 this morning after the detection of 38 new cases, according to a press release of the Ministry of Health.
The new infections are of Omicron variant, of which 29 were locally transmitted and the rest were imported; bringing the total Omicron cases in Cambodia to 735, including 297 Omicron community cases, it added.
At the same time, the same source said, zero COVID-19-related death were recorded for 24 days in a row while 17 more patients have successfully been cured; the death toll and total recovered cases stood at 3,015 and 117,303, respectively.
The first COVID-19 case was reported in Cambodia in late January 2020 in Preah Sihanouk province.

Cambodia Reaffirms Support for Timor-Leste’s Accession to ASEAN

Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, has reaffirmed Cambodia’s support for the request of Timor-Leste to be a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), according to H.E. Eang Sophalleth, Assistant to the Cambodian Premier.
While receiving visiting H.E. Dr. Adaljiza Albertina Xavier Reis Magno, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, at the Peace Palace here this morning, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said Cambodia will push for the ASEAN Economic Community and ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Fact-Finding Missions to Timor-Leste as soon as possible to be the basis for assessment and preparation of a roadmap as well as a precise timeline for the country to join the ASEAN family.
On the bilateral cooperation, the Prime Minister welcomed the request to dispatch Timor-Leste experts to Cambodia to learn more about the accession to ASEAN and the World Trade Organisation (WTO), and suggested that both countries’ relevant institutions to discuss ways to resume economic and trade exchange, especially to boost the effective implementation of agreements and MoUs already signed.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen asked Timor-Leste side to import Cambodian rice and consider investing in rice milling, storage and export-related infrastructure to ensure the sustainability of rice supply to Timor-Leste.
The Cambodian leader requested Timor-Leste to consider the South-South cooperation, particularly the agreement on investment protection, free trade agreement, and double taxation agreement between the two countries.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen thanked Timor-Leste’s leaders for the greetings and wished the country’s presidential election scheduled for Mar. 19, 2022 to be held smoothly and successfully.
H.E. Dr. Adaljiza Albertina Xavier Reis Magno spoke highly of peace, stability and rapid development of Cambodia, praised the Kingdom for the measures in containing and preventing the COVID-19 pandemic, and thanked the Royal Government for providing vaccines and materials against COVID-19 for Timor-Leste.
