Cambodian, Vietnamese Female Legislators’ Cooperation Discussed

President of Vietnam Women’s Union has requested the President of Cambodian National Assembly (NA) to facilitate experience sharing cooperation between its female lawmakers and the Vietnam Women’s Union.
Visiting Ms. Ha Thi Nga, also a Member of the Communist Party Central Committee and a Member of the Vietnamese NA, made the request on July 26 when received by Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei Heng Samrin, President of Cambodian NA, at the NA Palace in Phnom Penh.
Thanking the Cambodian NA President for his time and warm hospitality, Ms. Ha Thi Nga highlighted key achievements of the two women’s entities so far and their next five-year cooperation plan.
According to Ms. Ha Thi Nga, among the 499 members of the Vietnamese NA, 151 or around 30 percent are women.
Samdech Heng Samrin expressed his full support for the cooperation, stressing that female representation in politics is not only positive for respective country, but also beneficial globally.
The presence of women is an indispensable backbone for peace, social order and socio-economic growth, he added.
Samdech Heng Samrin continued that in Cambodia, women’s participation in both the state and private sectors has been enhanced at both national and sub-national levels.

Cambodia Approves 127 Singapore Investment Project Worth over US$1.5 Billion

As of June 2022, some 127 Singapore’s investment projects in operation were approved by the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) in the tourism, manufacturing, infrastructure and other sectors with investment capital reaching about US$1.53 billion, according to a press release on the outcomes of a webinar on “Discovering Cambodia – Insight into the Business Opportunities in Cambodia” on July 26.
Organised by the Singapore Business Federation (SBF) and the CDC, with support from the Embassy of Singapore in Phnom Penh and the Embassy of Cambodia in Singapore, the webinar was attended by some 150 business representatives, including from the Cambodian Chamber of Commerce, under the presidency of H.E. Sok Chenda Sophea, Minister attached to the Prime Minister and Secretary General of the CDC, H.E. Sok Khoeun, Cambodian Ambassador to Singapore, and H.E. Ms. Teo Lay Cheng, Singaporean Ambassador to Cambodia.

Speaking on the occasion, H.E. Sok Khoeun highlighted the economic diplomacy strategy for 2021-2023 launched in early 2021 with an aim to promote trade, investment, tourism and culture to contribute to national economic development and enhance Cambodia’s interest regionally and internationally. Cambodia diplomats have done their part and intensified their efforts to implement and promote such economic diplomacy to bring more investments and tourists to Cambodia.
In her opening remarks, H.E. Ms. Teo Lay Cheng said that Singapore is amongst Cambodia’s top five foreign investors. Investments span sectors such as estate, energy, trading and distribution, food/consumer, education, and finance. The two countries also enjoy easy connectivity with 35 passenger services per week.
The Singaporean ambassador added that Cambodia was one of the fastest growing economies in Asia. As the country emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic following a successful COVID-19 vaccination campaign, a return to earlier high levels of growth is anticipated.
For his part, H.E. Sok Chenda Sophea expressed his gratitude in his keynote address to the Singaporean investors and businesspeople for choosing Cambodia as their investment destination over the years. He added that Cambodia’s enabling investment environment has been a cornerstone awaiting Singapore investments to tap on the vast potential in Cambodia’s agri-food industries, services and other manufacturing sectors.
H.E. Minister further elaborated on the important role of Singapore’s FDI in Cambodia and called for more quality investments from potential investors from Singapore that will contribute to the fast recovery and development of Cambodia’s economy. He also emphasised the importance of Cambodia’s Investment Law, adopted in October 2021, that incentivises investors to apply responsible business conduct and inclusive business approaches in their investment and business practices.
The webinar was held under the ambit of the SBF’s FYIstival platform. Following the webinar, SBF will facilitate B2B meetings between the participants and speakers as a follow-up to further discuss Singapore’s business interest in Cambodia.
Other speakers included Emerging Markets Consulting Managing Director Mr. David Totten, Wing Bank Cambodia Chief Executive Officer Mr. Han Peng Kwang, and Lim Siang Huat Commercial Director Mr. Richard Seah.

Cambodia, Australia Glorify Trade and Investment Cooperation

Cambodia and Australia have expressed their satisfaction with and reaffirmed their commitment to further enhance their bilateral cooperation, mainly in trade and investment sectors.
The remarks were highlighted during a meeting between H.E. Pan Sorasak, Minister of Commerce, and H.E. Pablo Kang, Ambassador of Australia to Cambodia, at the ministry office in Phnom Penh on July 26.
Both sides exchanged views on the progress of cooperation under the Mekong-Australia Partnership (MAP), particularly in the competition and consumer protection sector between the General Department of Consumer Protection, Competition and Fraud Repression (CCF) of the Ministry of Commerce of Cambodia, the National Committee for Consumer Protection (NCCP), and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
H.E. Minister mentioned about high-level dialogues between CCF, NCCP, and ACCC, and training workshops, capacity building for investigating officers of CCF, and the like.
H.E. Pan Sorasak also thanked Australia for its support for Cambodia’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2022, especially for the key economic deliverables to be achieved during Cambodia’s chairmanship as well as the good cooperation under the ASEAN Economic Community pillar such as negotiations for ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA) Upgrade, implementation of Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement and so on.
For his part, H.E. Pablo Kang spoke highly of the key economic deliverables, which have reflected responses to global developments, basically of all parties’ endeavours in the AANZFTA Upgrade negotiations, a priority for ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand cooperation this year.

Two New Investment Projects worth US$14.3 Million Approved

Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) has endorsed two new investment projects with a total capital of US$14.3 million in Kampong Speu and Kandal provinces.
According to the council’s press release issued this morning, the newly approved projects belong to Milanna Leatherware M.F.Y (Cambodia) Co., Ltd. and Best Beauty Company Limited.
The first company will invest US$9.2 million for the creation of a belt and bag factory in Chongruk commune, Korng Pisei district, Kampong Speu province, while the second will inject US$5.1 million for a garment factory in Takhmao town, Kandal province, the CDC pointed out.
The two newly-approved investment projects are expected to create some 3,650 jobs for the locals, added the same source.

COVID-19: 20 More Cases Detected; Tally 136,651

Cambodia’s tally of COVID-19 jumped to 136,651 after the detection of 20 new cases, all of locally transmitted Omicron variant, the Ministry of Health pointed out in a press release this morning.
Meanwhile, 14 more patients have recovered while no new death was reported; the total recovered cases and death toll in the Kingdom thus stood at 133,435 and 3,056, respectively.
The Kingdom began to register new cases of COVID-19 since June 29, 2022 after 52 days of zero infection.
Recently, Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen appealed to his compatriots to increase their vigilance against the COVID-19 pandemic as the Omicron subvariants – BA.4 and BA.5 – are spreading in the country.
The Premier reaffirmed that there will be no closure of towns, schools and markets, but urged once again his fellow citizens to adhere to the health safety rules, particularly the “Three Dos, Three Don’ts” measure and to get vaccinated, both the basic and booster doses.
The first COVID-19 case was found in Cambodia in late January 2020 in Preah Sihanouk province.
