Cambodia Reiterates Support to Timor-Leste’s Application for ASEAN Membership

Cambodia has reaffirmed its unwavering support to Timor Leste’s application for the ASEAN Membership.

The commitment was made by Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, in a recent congratulatory message to his East Timorese counterpart H.E. Taur Matan Ruak on the momentous occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste.

“I will continue working closely with Your Excellency to further strengthen and deepen our bilateral ties and cooperation for the mutual benefit of our nations, thus contributing to peace, stability and prosperity in the region and beyond,” the Cambodian Premier added.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen further noted the consistent growth of bilateral and multilateral cooperation between the two countries since the establishment of diplomatic relations on July 29, 2002.

“Cambodia and Timor-Leste have also worked closely to support each other on matters of common interests at the regional and international frameworks,” he underlined.

For his part, H.E. Taur Matan Ruak said Timor-Leste appreciates the decades-long friendship and cooperation between the two countries and peoples.

“I am committed to building upon our existing bilateral relationship, and to continued collaboration on issues of regional and international importance. I am convinced that the excellent ties of our friendship will continue to prosper in the years ahead,” the East Timorese Prime Minister stressed.

COVID-19: 36 New Infections Recorded; Tally 136,789

Cambodia’s COVID-19 tally increased to 136,789 after 36 new cases were reported this morning.

According to a press release of the Ministry of Health, the new infections are all Omicron variant transmitted locally.

Meanwhile, there were 22 new recoveries while no new death was recorded; the total cured cases and death toll in the Kingdom thus stood at 133,517 and 3,056, respectively.

The Kingdom began to register new cases of COVID-19 since June 29, 2022 after 52 days of zero infection.

Recently, Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen appealed to his compatriots to increase their vigilance against the COVID-19 pandemic as the Omicron subvariants – BA.4 and BA.5 – are spreading in the country.

The Premier reaffirmed that there will be no closure of towns, schools and markets, but urged once again his fellow citizens to adhere to the health safety rules, particularly the “Three Dos, Three Don’ts” measure and to get vaccinated, both the basic and booster doses.

The first COVID-19 case was found in Cambodia in late January 2020 in Preah Sihanouk province.

Nearly 700 National and International Reporters Registered for 55th AMM and Related Meetings

As of July 30, a total of 675 reporters from 21 countries have registered to cover the 55th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (55th AMM) and Related Meetings being hosted by Cambodia from July 29 to Aug. 5, 2022 in Phnom Penh.

The figures were shared by the General Department of Information and Broadcasting of the Ministry of Information in charge of the registration, adding that of the reporters, 142 are women and 257 are foreign journalists.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the 55th AMM and related Meetings include the Meeting of the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon Free-zone (SEANWFZ) Commission, the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Interface Meeting with ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) Representatives, the 55th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (55th AMM), the ASEAN Post Ministerial Conferences (PMC+1) with ASEAN’s Dialogue Partners, the 23rd ASEAN Plus Three (APT) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, the 12th East Asia Summit (EAS) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, and the 29th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF).

Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, will preside over the opening ceremony of the 55th AMM and receive a joint courtesy call by the Foreign Ministers and the Secretary-General of ASEAN.

On the margins of the 55th AMM, the Foreign Ministers and the Secretary-General of ASEAN will witness the signing of the Instruments of Accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) by the Kingdom of Denmark, the Hellenic Republic, the Netherland, the Sultanate of Oman, the State of Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. They will also attend the ASEAN Prize 2021 Award ceremony.

There will be three separate trilateral meetings of Cambodia, and the ASEAN Secretariat with three ASEAN Dialogue Partners, namely Norway, Türkiye and Switzerland.

Apart from the above-mentioned ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partners and the six countries acceding the TAC, four other countries have been invited as Guests of the Chair of ASEAN 2022, namely Papua New Guinea, Morocco, Timor-Leste and Azerbaijan.

Another Cambodian Taekwondo Athlete Brings Home Another Gold Medal

Cambodian Taekwondo athlete, Phal Sovannath, has won another gold medal from the 2022 World Police & Fire Games in the Netherlands.

“Congratulations to the three Cambodian WT Taekwondo athletes who got gold medals at the 2022 World Police & Fire Games in the Netherlands,” Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen wrote on his official Facebook page this afternoon.

Yesterday, athletes Sam Yudeth and Va Mithona obtained gold medals, today athlete Phal Sovannath won another one, he added.

“This is the pride of our whole nation. All the three WT Taekwondo athletes participating in the 2022 World Police & Fire Games the Netherlands from July 26 to 31 got gold medals,” the Premier underlined.

According to its online source, the World Police & Fire Games is an international sporting event for police, fire, customs and corrections services personnel. It brings more than 10,000 athletes from 70 different countries to compete in 63 sports.

11th ASEAN Para Games: Wheelchair Basketball Team Wins Cambodia’s First Gold Medal

Cambodia has grabbed its first gold medal at the 11th ASEAN Para Games 2022 in Indonesia which was officially opened yesterday evening.

The Cambodian team won the gold medal in the 3×3 women’s wheelchair basketball event, after defeating their Thai counterpart 7-5. The final took place at SriTex Arena Stadium in Solo city this afternoon.

Cambodia has sent 115 athletes to compete in 11 sport disciplines including athletics, swimming, men’s and women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s wheelchair basketball, blind basketball, Seven-a-side football, table tennis, badminton, weightlifting, chess, and boccia.

In the 9th ASEAN Para Games in Malaysia, Cambodia got 5 silver and 5 bronze medals. The 10th games, scheduled to be hosted by the Philippines, were cancelled due to the COVID-19 threat.
