Cambodia Achieves Implementation of Aichi Biodiversity Targets

Cambodia has achieved the implementation of the Aichi targets for global biodiversity conservation.
The update was shared recently by H.E. Neth Pheaktra, Secretary of State and Spokesperson at the Ministry of Environment, adding that the success was because Cambodia has tripled the size of protected areas set out in the strategic plan for global biodiversity conservation.
The Aichi Biodiversity Targets set the minimum rate of 17 percent for countries to expand their respective protected areas, according to H.E. Neth Pheaktra.
For Cambodia, in 2022, the protected area is 7.3 million hectares of the total forest cover area of 8.5 million hectares or 46. 86 percent of the country’s total land surface.
Thanks to the successful conservation of its forests, Cambodia has achieved the Aichi Biodiversity Targets.
With the achievement, Cambodia has so far earned US$11.6 million from selling carbon credits to voluntary markets such as Disney, Kering, Intuit, Shell and Gucci.
The sale of carbon credits is from Cambodia’s two regions including Kao Seima Wildlife Sanctuary and Southern Cardamom National Park.
The ministry also schedules to sell carbon credits from another region at Prey Lang Wildlife Sanctuary in Stung Treng province.
