Cambodia Requests AAIA to Fight Together against Fake News


Cambodia has requested the Asian Access to Information Alliance (AAIA) partner countries to make good innovation to fight together against fake news.

The request was made by H.E. SOK Prasith, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Information (MoInfo), as a representative of Cambodia to attend the virtual AAIA Forum Series Part I on Best Practices and Challenges in Securing Right to Information (RTI), by focusing on Information, Communications and Capacity Development Campaign, on Mar. 12.

H.E. SOK Prasidth also raised his concerns about the impacts of artificial intelligence (AI), and its guidance and problem solution and management, as well as the strong needs of Law on Access to Information (A2I) for digital literacy promotion and protection.

The Secretary of State also laid stress on building foundation of Law on A2I for evolving society with advancement of digital technology as it was essential for government’s accountability to combat corruption, and empower citizens to make comfort decisions for mor
e transparencies.

On the occasion, the Cambodian side shared the virtual AAIA Forum Series about Cambodia’s experience in her A2I and rules for this function with six topics, namely 1). ensuring A2I in Cambodia (A Campaign Approach), 2). guarantor of A2I, 3). challenges in disseminating information and building capacity, 4). keys to successful campaigns, 5). target audiences for A2I campaign, and 6). local norms and cultural factors.

The virtual AAIA Forum Series Part I attracted co-founding member countries from Cambodia, host Philippines, China’s Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Israel.

Asian Access to Information Alliance (AAIA) is a multi-state partnership founded on the principles of solidarity, knowledge exchange, and strategic cooperation, and is composed of government bodies implementing comprehensive access to information (ATI) programmes, policies, frameworks, and best practices.

AAIA projected areas of cooperation include 1). exchange of information with respect to the methods and means of impl
ementing Freedom of Information (FOI)/Right to Information (RTI) in their respective countries, 2). conduct of training courses, peer learning, people-to-people exchange, 3). hosting and participation in forums, workshop, seminars, conventions and conference, 4). exchange of information on capacity development mechanisms and strategies in the promotion of FOI/RTI, and 5). provision of technical assistance of operational activities with due involvement of the Alliance.
