Former Head of ECCC’s Victims Support Section Wins IAGS’ 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award

H.E. Dr. Helen Jarvis, former head of the Victims Support Section at the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) known as the Khmer Rouge Tribunal has been selected by the International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) as the winner of its 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award.
According to a recent letter of Dr. Henri C. Theriault, President of IAGS to H.E. Dr. Helen Jarvis, this award recognises an individual scholar who has made substantial long-term contributions to the field of genocide studies and the struggle against genocide.
“As is evident in the nomination statement by Dr.Greg Stanton, your deep commitment and myriad intellectual and political accomplishments, including a principal role in the formation of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia, have helped shape the response to the Cambodian Genocide and advance our understanding of it and genocide in general, as well as how past genocides can be addressed,” he wrote in the letter.
The award, to be publicly announced at this week’s IAGS conference, includes a lifetime membership in IAGS as well as an official certificate, he added.
H.E. Dr. Helen Jarvis, who hold both Cambodian and Australian nationality, served as Chief of the Public Affairs Section from the inception of the Court until June 1, 2009, from which time she serves as head of the Victims Support Section until her retirement on June 30, 2010.
