Japan Announces US$220,000 Assistance for ECCC This Year

The Government of Japan has recently decided to contribute US$220,000 for the Extraordinary Chamber in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) for 2023.

The financial contribution was announced in a press release of the Embassy of Japan in Phnom Penh made public yesterday evening.

The ECCC has played an important role for the conclusion of entire peace process in Cambodia, deliberation of justice to the victims of the Khmer Rouge and strengthening the rule of law in Cambodia and beyond, the release said.

Furthermore, it continued, the ECCC is expected to succeed its legacy to the next generation and to disseminate the significance of accomplishment of the Khmer Rouge trials to the public under its residual function.

According to the embassy, the Government of Japan has been assisting the ECCC since its inception and, as of today, the financial assistance from Japan amounts to US$88.9 million including the aforementioned contribution, approximately 27 percent of the total funds contributed by donors to the national and UN components of the ECCC. Moreover, Japan, along with France, has actively followed the proceedings of the ECCC as co-chair of the Friends of the ECCC.
