Kuala Kangsar, Perak: Seniman Diraja Datuk Lat Pledges to Promote Malaysia’s Cultural Diversity

In Kuala Kangsar, celebrated Malaysian cartoonist Datuk Mohd Nor Khalid, popularly known as Lat, has expressed his commitment to further promoting Malaysia’s cultural diversity. This pledge comes as he was bestowed with the title of Seniman Diraja (Royal Artist) at the Istana Iskandariah. Lat’s focus will be on highlighting the rich cultural tapestry of his birth state, Perak, primarily through his works displayed at the Galeri Rumah Lat in Batu Gajah.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the opening of Galeri Rumah Lat has been a source of pride for him, providing a platform to showcase his comic drawings that reflect the diversity of Malaysian society. He expressed gratitude for the positive response the gallery has received and noted his pride in serving both Perak and the nation.

Earlier today, Sultan Nazrin Shah of Perak conferred the Seniman Diraja title on Lat during the investiture ceremony for Perak state awards and medal recipients. This ceremony was part of the celebrations marking the Sultan’s 67th birthday. The title was initially announced by Sultan Nazrin Shah on July 8, during the opening of Galeri Rumah Lat, recognizing Lat’s significant contributions to promoting Malaysia internationally through his art.

Lat emphasized that the Royal Artist title signifies the close bond between the palace and the artistic endeavors of individuals like himself in Malaysia. He remarked that the appreciation of arts in Malaysia extends beyond comics to include music, film, and stage acting, all of which are valued by the palace.

Additionally, Lat extended an invitation to the public to visit the Galeri Rumah Lat, noting that admission is currently free and expected to remain so until the end of the year. He assured that even if an admission fee is introduced, it would be affordable. The Galeri Rumah Lat in Silverlake Batu Gajah officially opened its doors to visitors on July 8.
