National Assembly Second Vice President Opens Kindergarten at Public School

H.E. Vong Sauth, Second Vice President of the National Assembly, inaugurated a kindergarten in Kamchay Mear district in Prey Veng province on Tuesday.

Built at a cost of 252 million Riel (about US$63,000), the kindergarten at Cheach Primary School in Cheach Lech village in Cheach commune started operating in recent months.

‘After the Pol Pot regime, this commune was very remote without proper infrastructure such as roads, schools and hospitals,’ the Vice President told some 1,000 local residents at the inauguration.

‘Now we have all this infrastructure.’

The senior lawmaker – who was born in the commune – said he came to see the school where he used to study last year.

“I saw parents taking their kids for pre-school but there was no kindergarten at the time,’ he said. “I came up with the idea of a new kindergarten building so kids have enough facilities.’

The Vice President said the new National Assembly and government had been “working hard’ for the past half year.

‘We are proud and optimistic with t
he goals of the Government’s Pentagonal Strategy for 2030 and 2050,’ he said, referring to aims for Cambodia to reach upper-middle and high-income status.

During a visit to neighbouring Thbong Khmum province last month, the Vice President highlighted the need to invest more in primary schools and kindergartens.

‘To build effective human capital, we should emphasise kids’ education from the beginning,’ said the former minister of social affairs, veterans and youth rehabilitation.
