PM Hun Sen: 2022, a Most Successful Year for Cambodia’s Diplomacy

AKP Phnom Penh, The year 2022 was one of the most successful years for Cambodia’s diplomatic work, said Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen while presiding over the closing ceremony of the annual meeting of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, held here at the Peace Palace this afternoon.

“I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for the many important efforts and achievements that the leaders and officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have achieved in 2022. I would also like to commend the key contribution of relevant ministries, institutions and agencies to make 2022, one of the most successful years for our Cambodian diplomacy,” he said in his address.

2022 was the year that Cambodia took over the rotating chairmanship of ASEAN, with many biggest challenges ever in the history of our regional community, he underlined, continuing that although Cambodia has successfully controlled the COVID-19 pandemic and reopened the country, the emergence of new problems has put serious pressure on the public health sector.

The Cambodian Premier also mentioned about the complex rivalry between the two biggest superpowers; the political, security and humanitarian issues in Myanmar; the deterioration of the situation on the Korean Peninsula due to North Korea’s largest missile launch; the Taiwan Strait crisis, and so on.

“But the most horrible thing that will break the international order and human independence is Russia’s war against Ukraine, which has so far killed tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians, displaced millions of people, and destroyed much of the infrastructure, homes and property,” he said.

Samdech Techo Prime Minister stressed that the above-said events had a direct and indirect impact on Cambodia, putting serious pressure on its sovereignty, independence, neutrality, political decisions, both nationally and internationally.

But, he added, by adhering to an independent rule-based foreign policy, and to the core interests of the nation and people, Cambodia has turned those challenges into opportunities and demonstrated a genuine willingness to abide by the laws and principles and the UN Charter.
