PM Urges for Acceleration of Internet Service Improvement

As the digitalisation is growing fast in the country, Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen has instructed the telecom companies to speed up internet service network installation, especially at housing communities known as Borey.

At the graduation ceremony of 623 students of the University of Puthisastra in Phnom Penh this morning, Samdech Techo Hun Sen expressed his support for the recent announcement of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunication to end the monopoly signed between telecom companies and Borey owners.

“I have reaffirmed that the government did not recognise the contract, but needs competition in communication service provision […],” he underlined, adding that all sectors, ranging from education and finance to transport and retail selling need internet.

The number of internet subscribers in Cambodia has surged to 17.8 million so far, exceeding the country’s total population of about 16 million, H.E. Chea Vandeth, Minister of Posts and Telecommunication, shared the figures at a press conference organised by the Royal Government Spokesperson Unit here early this month.

About 17.48 million have subscribed to the mobile internet service and 312,233 others to fixed internet service, he added.

There are 45 telecommunication providers in Cambodia and five of them are mobile service providers, including Smart, Cellcard, Viettel, Cootel and SeaTel.
