SOUQ MAJJANI, MELAKA’S ONE-STOP CENTRE FOR ASNAF TO GET FREE ITEMS, CLOTHING

MELAKA, Four years after its establishment, Souq Majjani, a collection centre of used goods in Bukit Baru One Square, continues to be the focal point for people in need, especially those from the asnaf group (tithe recipients) to get free items and clothing.

Melaka Islamic Religious Council (MAIM) Baitulmal manager Mohd Hairulamin Mohd Sis said about 250 to 280 individuals would come to Souq Majjani every month to obtain clothing or other necessities.

He said the centre was established to collect and distribute household items, kitchenware, toys, school uniforms and clothing items in a more organised and structured manner for those in need, adding that they are not required to present any document or fulfil any conditions to get the items.

‘Last year, 3,304 recipients were recorded to have received goods and clothing collected at Souq Majjani, with an average of about 5,000 pieces of clothing distributed to needy individuals assisted by MAIM’s Al Taqwa Volunteer Body (BSAT),’ he told Bernama today.

He sa
id besides the poor, the centre also welcomes any Muslim in Melaka who need assistance.

He said that the distribution of donated goods is carried out through the walk-in method, from Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm, and via programmes and events organised by various parties in collaboration with BSAT.

According to him, BSAT will screen every piece of clothing or item before displaying them for people to choose from, adding that they would also wash and iron clothes delivered to the centre to minimise operating costs.

Mohd Hairulamin said the centre is also offering baju kurung, baju melayu, and tudung in conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya.

He said Souq Majjani continues to receive support and donations from various parties, adding that last year 873 donors were recorded.

Meanwhile, he said, they are seeking larger premises to store items donated by the public as the current premises have limited space.
