The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) and Cambodia Financial Intelligence Unit (CFIU) of the National Bank of Cambodia will cooperate on information exchange related to money laundering and terrorism financing in the field of agriculture.

Both sides signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) here at the ministry yesterday under the presidency of H.E. Veng Sakhon, Minister of MAFF and H.E. Ms. Ouk Maly, Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia.

According to H.E. Minister, apart from the collaboration in information exchange, the MoU will also help build the capacity of relevant officials in analysing, monitoring, and controlling the terrorists’ activities in money laundering and terrorism financing in order to take timely and effective crackdown measures, which will maintain financial security, investment environment, and ensure justice, equity and transparency for investors.

This is the 18th MoU reached by the CFIU and local competent institutions.

The three-year Keo Seima Conservation Project (KSCP), funded by USAID, has been completed successfully.

On Aug. 12, Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and project partners held an online workshop to mark the successful completion of the project, under the presidency of H.E. Sao Sopheap, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Environment.

According to WCS, during the event, key project achievements were presented focusing on collaborative conservation efforts to improve biodiversity conservation and ecosystem health, sustainable and equitable economic opportunities, community livelihoods, and natural capital reinvestment, and to strengthen inclusive landscape governance in KSWS in the Eastern Plains, Cambodia.

A key aim of USAID programmes is to ensure long-term benefits, beyond the life of the project, continued the same source, adding that the support of the KSCP to the successful implementation of the KSWS REDD+ project will ensure all of the above outcomes continue and expand into the future.

KSCP is a successful three-year collaboration between USAID, WCS, the communities around the Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary, the Ministry of Environment, local authorities, and other development partners, said USAID Cambodia on its official Facebook page.

Through this project, it added, USAID helped to avoid more than 1.6 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, which helped Cambodia meet its national greenhouse gas emission reduction goals while also generating revenues from the sale of carbon credits.

Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) is accelerating the drafting of National Roadmap for Cambodia’s sustainable food systems for 2030 roadmap to further promote the sector toward sustainable development.

A meeting to examine the final draft of the National Roadmap took place recently via videoconference under the chairmanship of H.E. Veng Sakhon, Minister of MAFF and Vice President of the Council for Agricultural and Rural Development (CARD), with the participation of representatives of 13 relevant ministries and institutions as well as those of development partners such as FAO, ADB, WB, WHO, GIZ, and UNICEF.

The roadmap focuses on ensuring a sustainable, well-nutritious food system and providing equitable livelihood opportunities, especially for the youths with innovation, poor farmers, vulnerable people though the increase of productivity, agricultural diversification toward green growth, and increase of smallholder farmers’ and vulnerable people’s income.

The assistance from the Government and people of Japan have contributed to the development of Cambodia in almost all areas, which reflects the crucial role of Japan as an important “strategic development partner” of the Royal Government of Cambodia.

The remark was made by H.E. Aun Pornmoniroth, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economy and Finance during a recent virtual meeting with H.E. Mikami Masahiro, Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia, according to a press release of the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

The Cambodian DPM expressed his profound thanks to the Government of Japan for its material, technical and financial support for Cambodia, particularly the one million doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine which is a generous gesture of Japan.

H.E. Aun Pornmoniroth thus requested the Government of Japan, through H.E. Ambassador, for more assistance in AstraZeneca vaccines, as well as for its support and coordination so that Cambodia can order the vaccines.

Both sides also discussed the recovery and development mechanisms of different sectors when the COVID-19 eases, especially the recovery and promotion of investment in Cambodia.

Cambodia welcomes the consideration of a concessional loan plan (phase 2) for the emergency support programme in response to COVID-19 outbreak to support the implementation of economic recovery measures as well as control measures against the pandemic.
