Construction of Choeung Ek Sewage Treatment Plant Begins Today

The construction of Choeung Ek sewage treatment plant starts today. The ground-breaking ceremony took place under the auspices of Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen and H.E. Mikami Masahiro, Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia.
According to Phnom Penh Public Works and Transport Department, the treatment plant is capable to handle about 5,000 cubic metres of wastewater a day.
The plant comprises a pumping facility of 468 cubic metres of wastewater per hour, sludge treatment system, and 10-by-1,690-metre road for drainage.
Located at Choeung Ek lake area in the southern part of Phnom Penh, the plant will encompass 3 hectares of land surface.
Funded by the Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the project was estimated to cost more than US$20 million.
The sewage treatment plant, constructed by Kubota-Metawater Joint Venture, is expected to finish on Nov. 15, 2023.
