COVID-19: 658 New Cases; 248 Imported

A total of 658 new cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) were reported in Cambodia this morning, of which 248 were imported, pointed out the Ministry of Health in a press release.

The tally thus jumped to 77,243, including 10,537 imported cases, the same source continued.

Besides, it added, 798 more patients have recovered and 22 others have lost their lives due to the pandemic; bringing the total cured and death cases to 69,996 and 1,397, respectively.

The first COVID-19 case was detected in Cambodia in late January 2020 in Preah Sihanouk province. The confirmed cases have surged quickly this year due to the Feb. 20 community outbreak.

Visits to Angkor Resort Temporarily Banned

The APSARA Authority has temporarily banned visits to Angkor Archaeological Park in Siem Reap for 14 days, from July 30 to Aug. 12, due to the COVID-19 threat.
The notification was made yesterday by the APSARA National Authority and Angkor Enterprise, adding that there is no entry ticket sale allowed during the period.
The ban followed the measure imposed by the Royal Government of Cambodia for Siem Reap to contain the possible spread of COVID-19 especially the Delta variant in the community.
Along with Siem Reap, the government has also imposed the lockdown of other seven provinces including Koh Kong, Pursat, Battambang, Pailin, Banteay Meanchey, Oddar Meanchey, and Preah Vihear.
As of July 29, the national tally reached 75,917 of them 68,386 were cured and 1,350 died.

Minister: Information Can Develop or Harm a Society

Media and information have a vital role and it can either push the development or create chaos in a society, said Minister of Information H.E. Khieu Kanharith.
The minister made the reminders to about 100 participating media practitioners, lecturers and experts when addressing the opening of a workshop on “Ethics for Live News on Facebook” virtually organised yesterday by the Club of Cambodian Journalists.
In the past, information could only accessible by a privileged few, and now in the 21st century everyone can access it, he said.
The minister underlined three key drivers that makes information so accessible across the world which are internet connection, social media platforms, and global library.
Unlike other commodities, news product is intangible but serves as a foundation to get things moving, so it is important that they move toward the right direction, he added.
He underlined that to ensure that the information is made for the best interest of a society and its members, the news producers need to know the importance of the news and comply with the media ethics.
H.E. Khieu Kanharith again reminded all those involving in the media production circle to also be well aware of their social responsibility.

COVID-19: 668 New Cases; Tally 76,585

Cambodia registered 668 new cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19); the tally rose to 76,585.
According to a press release of the Ministry of Health made public this morning, of the new infections, 240 were imported cases and the rest were community cased linked to the Feb. 20 outbreak.
At the same time, 812 new recoveries and 25 new deaths were recorded; bringing the total cured cases and death toll to 69,198 and 1,375, respectively.

Kade Lake of Thbong Khmum Mulled as Protected Area

Concerned government authorities and development partners have convened a virtual consultation to include Kade lake in Thbong Khmum province into Cambodia’s protected area.
It was an intention to preserve the richness of the lake areas spreading about 1,643 hectares in Kroch Chmar district.
According to the Ministry of Environment, Kade lake is home to at least 75 kinds of flooded forests, 56 species of fish, 64 types of birds, 20 family lines of reptiles, 9 species of mammals and 10 species of mollusc.
It also has a collection of trees and could be a very potential ecotourism site.
Though a decision has not yet been made, all stakeholders support the inclusion of Kade lake as a protected area.
