253 Arrested In Cambodia’s Illegal Gambling Crackdown

PHNOM PENH, Cambodian authorities arrested 253 people in raids across the country, in a crackdown on illegal gambling last month, according to the National Committee for Counter Trafficking (NCCT), yesterday.

“The competent authorities had inspected 9,622 suspected locations, and taken legal action against 116 illegal gambling sites, arresting 253 people for prosecution,” it said in a statement.

The statement was issued after a meeting in Phnom Penh, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister, Sar Kheng, who is also the NCCT’s chairman.

Cambodian authorities launched a nationwide crackdown on all types of illegal gambling, including lottery, cockfighting, poker and football betting on Sept 17.

Flash floods hit parts of Cambodia, killing 4

Flash floods have been hitting parts of Cambodia, leaving at least four people dead, Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen said on Saturday, Trend reports citing Xinhua.
In a voice message released publicly, Hun Sen said rainwater flooding has also forced the evacuation of a number of affected families to higher ground.
He added that the floods have inundated 151,412 hectares of rice paddy and 41,024 hectares of other crops.
“Water has receded at some places, but risen at some places, and according to weather forecast, there will be some more rains,” Hun Sen said. “However, the situation is under control.”

UNFPA to Continue Supporting Cambodia’s Women Promotion and Protection

AKP Phnom Penh, The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has pledged to continue supporting Cambodia’s women promotion and protection.

The pledge was made by Ms. Sandra Bernklau, newly-appointed UNFPA Representative to Cambodia, during her meeting with H.E. Dr. Ing Kantha Phavi, Minister of Women’s Affairs here at the ministry on Oct. 6.

H.E. Dr. Ing Kantha Phavi congratulated Ms. Sandra Bernklau on her new role in Cambodia and appreciated the good cooperation between the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and UNFPA so far.

The minister also made some requests to UNFPA including preparation of a monitoring and evaluation (M&E) system on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) implementation, a study on the roots cause for sexual abuse, a multi-sector service provision to help GBV victims, a digital system creation to provide information related to victims’ legal services, and a provision of protection services to the elderly.

She underlined the government’s commitment to implement the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Nairobi, Kenya, and to eliminate the violence against women and girls by 2030.

Ms. Sandra Bernklau promised to discuss the minister’s request among her team.

She also asked for a representative from the Ministry of Women’s Affairs to provide inputs for the UNFPA 7th Country Programme and UNAFF meeting scheduled to happen later this year.

Nearly 700 Prisoners Assessed for Royal Pardon during Water Festival

AKP Phnom Penh, A list of 684 prisoners, 64 of whom are women, has been endorsed for an assessment for the royal pardon during the upcoming Water Festival and Independence Day.

A meeting to review the prisoners qualified for jail term reduction and elimination took place on Oct. 6 here at the Ministry of Justice under the chairmanship of Justice Minister H.E. Koeut Rith.

According to H.E. Kim Santepheap, Secretary of State and Spokesperson at the Ministry of Justice, of the prisoners, 626 (55 women) were requested for jail term reduction, while 57 (9 women) for jail elimination.

Those inmates are from the 20 municipal and provincial jails and the 4 correction centres across Cambodia, he added.

The prisoners entitled for the evaluations are those who are aging, disabled, having chronic disease, and charged with minor crimes.

In addition, they must have served at least two thirds of their sentence for prisoners seeking term elimination, and one third for those requesting for term reduction.

It is a usual practice in Cambodia that the government allows the consideration of inmates with special condition and good performance to be granted royal pardon or jail term reduction during major traditional celebrations, like January 7 Victory Day, Khmer New Year, Visak Bochea, National Independence Day and Water Festival.

Cambodian PM Sends Condolence Message to Thai Counterpart on Recent Mass Shooting

AKP Phnom Penh, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, has sent a condolence message to H.E. Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand over the recent mass shooting in a Thai northeastern province.

“I was very shocked and deeply saddened to learn about the terrible mass shooting at a child-care centre in the northeastern province of Nong Bua Lam Phu on 06 October 2022, which claimed the lives of a number of people, most of whom were children and left many others injured,” Samdech Techo Hun Sen wrote in his message dated Oct. 8.

“During this saddest moment, on behalf of the Government and people of the Kingdom of Cambodia, allow me to convey my deepest condolences and profound sympathy to Your Excellency and through you to the Government and the people of the Kingdom of Thailand, particularly the bereaved families and the injured,” he added.

Cambodia stands with Thailand in its grief over this massacre incident and wishes the injured a speedy recovery, the Premier underlined.
