Cambodia Welcomes Another Newborn Dolphin Calf in 2024


The Fisheries Administration of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) has announced the presence of another dolphin calf this year.

The newborn dolphin was spotted swimming with a herd of two other adult dolphins at 11:40 am on Mar. 25 at Anlong Koh Pdao pool, Koh Pdao village, Kampong Cham commune, Sambo district, Kratie province by a research team of the Fisheries Administration and WWF-Cambodia, the MAFF pointed out.

This is the 6th dolphin calf registered in Cambodia in 2024, said the ministry in a news release on Monday.

Last year, eight dolphin calves were counted, up from six each in 2022 and 2021.

The Mekong Irrawaddy dolphins (Orcaella brevirostris) are a living natural treasure of Cambodia and are fully protected under the Kingdom’s Fisheries Law. The population is ranked as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List, the highest international threat ranking for endangered species.

According to WWF-Cambodia, the presence of the dolphin in the Mekong is an indication of hea
lthy fisheries and healthy rivers, including biodiversity and natural ecosystems that provide life-support services for people.

Cambodian Statesman Receives Chairman of Maekyung Media Group


The President of the Supreme Privy Council to His Majesty the King and President of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, received here at the January 7 Palace this morning visiting H.E. Dr. Chang Dae-whan, Chairman of Maekyung Media Group.

In the meeting, Samdech Techo Hun Sen expressed warm welcome to H.E. Dr. Chang Dae-whan’s visit, and hoped that it will explore more investment opportunities in Cambodia.

The former Prime Minister of Cambodia also briefed his guest on the history of diplomatic relations between Cambodia and the Republic of Korea established in 1996, stressing that he is the founder.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen emphasised that thanks to this diplomatic relationship, many South Korean companies have come to invest in Cambodia, and tens of thousands of Cambodians have been accepted to work in the Republic of Korea.

Regarding the bilateral cooperation, Samdech Techo asked both sides to pay attention to some key areas, including the strengthening
of bilateral relations, promotion of Mekong-RoK cooperation and ASEAN-RoK cooperation to be more effective, and enhancement of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), and the bilateral cooperation within the UN framework.

H.E. Dr. Chang Dae-whan took the opportunity to invite Samdech Techo Hun Sen to attend the World Knowledge Forum to be organised by Maekyung Media Group in the Republic of Korea in September this year.

The World Knowledge Forum was launched in 2000 to pursue balanced global development and prosperity based on knowledge sharing.

Cambodia Attends 31st ASCC Council Meeting in Laos


Cambodia has attended the 31st ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) Council Meeting and other related meetings in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.

The meeting took place in Luang Prabang province on Mar. 24, with the participation of ASCC ministers and senior officials, pertinent delegates from Timor-Leste, the ASEAN Secretariat, and other stakeholders.

The Cambodian delegation was led by H.E. Dr. Hang Chuon Naron, Minister of Education, Youth, and Sports.

Addressing the function, H.E. Dr. Hang Chuon Naron congratulated Laos for its role as a rotating chairmanship of ASEAN and the successful launch of ASCC data for the monitoring and evaluation system of the ASEAN Secretariat.

H.E. Hang Chuon Naron underlined the significance of strengthening cooperation in education, 21st century skills, and digital skills for living in the AI age.

The minister reiterated Cambodia’s stand in promoting the comprehensive implementation of an agenda on women, peace, and security in the region, encouraging all member
states to transform that agenda into their national agenda.

He also supported the framework agreement on the ASEAN Public Health Emergency Coordination System (APHECS), the Vang Vieng Declaration on Promoting the Small and Medium-sized Cultural Enterprises, and the ASEAN pathway towards carbon neutrality by 2050.

Japan Provides Grant Assistance to Enrich Quality of Life for People in Cambodia


The Japanese government has provided more than US$850,000 in grant to the Golden of Heart (HoG) and the Association for Aid and Relief, Japan (AAR Japan).

The contracts on Japanese Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects were signed here on Mar. 25 by Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. UENO Atsushi, and representatives of the two organisations.

Some US$553,969 of the total amount goes to HoG to implement the ‘Project on Developing 4-year Quality Physical Education Teacher Education University through Utilising ICT’ (Year 2), while US$300,987 is for the AAR Japan to promote employment for persons with disabilities through improving the environment of Women’s Development Centre and strengthening the network with communities in Kandal province.

Speaking at the function, H.E. Ambassador UENO expressed his hope that these grants will enrich the quality of life for people in each project area, and further promote friendship between Japan and Cambodia.

The Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects started
in Cambodia in 2002 to support activities by Japanese NGOs to help Cambodia’s reconstruction and development efforts at the grassroots level.

Since 2002, the Government of Japan has provided assistance for 160 projects, mainly in the fields of primary education, health, agriculture and mine clearance in Cambodia.

Lao President: Laos is Fortunate to be a Neighbour of Cambodia


Laos is fortunate to be a neighbour of Cambodia, H.E. Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith, President of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, told Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, during their courtesy meeting in Vientiane this morning.

On the occasion, the Lao president also expressed his hope that the two countries will continue to maintain their traditional and historical relationship and work together to address challenges to make it better for the interest of the two peoples.

H.E. Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith recalled his relations with former leaders and senior officials of Cambodia, and was confident that this legacy will constitute a solid foundation for the next generation to continue to further cultivate this relationship.

For his part, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet briefed H.E. President of Laos on the outcomes of his fruitful talks with his Lao counterpart H.E. Sonexay Siphandone, especially on the energy cooperation, border affairs, and the cooperation in other areas such as educa
tion, connectivity, transport, construction of an expressway from Vientiane to the border with Cambodia, and the construction of a bridge across the Pov River between the Cambodian province of Preah Vihear and the Lao province of Champasak, and so on.

H.E. Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith welcomed the outcomes of the bilateral summit between Cambodian and Lao Premiers on Mar. 25 and affirmed the Lao side’s commitment to finding solutions to the remaining issues, to improve the relations and cooperation between the two countries.
